Half asleep

carnivorous apparitions bite my heels
as i stumble through opaque blackness
caustic aberrations visible only to my mind
i envision claws set deep in rusted bones,
a leathery hide loosely stretched over them
desperate, vigorous, the denizens of this gauntlet
ravenous in search of their prey
called by unthinkable creatures to feed on my fear
no, surely i am dreaming
surely in truth my body is safe and warm
beneath layers of coarse cotton security
my flesh risks no harm
the shadows, not so dense as they seem,
are but garments and trinkets
their mutated shapes cast onto the walls
animated by flickering candlelight and imagination
